Spring Term 2 ‘Ready, Steady… Grow !’

This term our inquiry title is ‘Ready, steady … grow!’ So far this term we have been exploring plants and growth. We have all planted our own sunflower seeds and have been learning how to look after our  growing shoots. We are carrying out a really exciting experiment where we have chosen 2 places in our classroom to place our plant pots. We are now measuring and comparing growth to see which area has the best growing conditions.

We are going to be looking at what farmers across the world grow as the term goes on and compare this to what British farmers grow. We are also going to be welcoming spring with some walks around the village looking for signs of the new season.

Spring Term 1 ‘New Year, Happy Me’

This term, our inquiry title is ‘New Year, Happy Me’. We have been exploring all about what ‘new year’ means to us and also to others across the world. We have been thinking about how to be the best versions of our selves this year and what skill we would love to achieve. The children have enjoyed learning about the traditions of Chinese New Year this term and comparing these traditions to our traditions here in England. We have loved bringing Chinese New Year traditions to life here at Lympsham including preforming our very own Dragon Dance to the KS1 children.

We have been looking at Winter and all it brings, including the season changes and hibernation. The children have been exploring what it means for animals to hibernate and what happens to our Country in the winter. We have explored the science behind freezing and melting and why it can snow when it gets really cold! The children in the Unicorn class have enjoyed taking part in the Great British Bird watch and enjoyed some home learning too around this topic too.

Autumn Term 2 ‘Traditions’

Another great term in the Unicorn Class here at Lympsham exploring our Inquiry of traditions. This term we been looking at different traditions ranging from our family traditions in our family homes to traditions across our country and the world. The children have enjoyed learning about the importance of Remembrance Day, why we celebrate Bonfire Night and the tradition of Diwali. The children have enjoyed learning about the tradition of Christmas and the values of Christianity around the celebration. We had many discussions around the act of Christmas giving and as a class we wanted to give something back to our community this year. We came up with holding a class bake sale to raise money for The Children’s Hospice South West, which raised an incredible £136.85! The children baked lots of delicious cakes and cookies at home and brought them in to school to sell to family and their peers. When reflecting on this, the children had a strong sense of pride in the achievements and felt so happy they were able to support this charity in such a positive and meaningful way at Christmas.

Following our  focus book ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ the children enjoyed practicing their writing skills in their own post office in the classroom. We used our counting skills to buy envelopes and stamps and then worked hard drawing and writing our Christmas lists before sending them off. We extended this learning further by posting our very own Christmas cards to our families using the village post box which the children found so exciting! To finish off our term, the children put on an amazing Nativity preformed at our village church for our families to enjoy.

Autumn Term 1 ‘Marvellous me’

What a wonderful term the Unicorn Class have had here at Lympsham. The children have been exploring all about themselves and their families through our Curriculum Inquiry. We have come to the conclusion that we are all unique and special and have enjoyed celebrating our differences. The children have enjoyed sharing their favourite stories together, drawing self and family portraits and enjoyed discussing the differences they found. We used different materials  to build our homes including Lego, different sized wooden blocks and gave junk modelling a good try too. We have together created a classroom charter listening to everyone’s ideas and views which we then all signed with a thumb print giving the children ownership of their rules. We have also explored height and size learning new mathematic language. The children have enjoyed exploring their names and learning how to write them.
